Wearing a saree for the first time can feel intimidating, especially when you are looking at several metres of fabric and wondering where to begin.
The good news is that a classic saree drape becomes much easier with a little practice.
This guide explains a basic Nivi-style drape, one of the most familiar ways to wear a saree.
Step 1: Get Everything Ready
Before you begin, arrange your saree, fitted blouse, suitable petticoat, safety pins and footwear.
Wear your chosen footwear while adjusting the length so that the finished saree does not drag along the floor.
Choose a comfortable surface and a full-length mirror if possible.
Step 2: Start Tucking the Saree
Begin with the plain end of the saree and tuck it securely into the petticoat at your waist.
Continue wrapping the fabric around your body once, keeping the lower edge at a consistent height.
Avoid pulling it so tightly that walking becomes uncomfortable.
Step 3: Create the Front Pleats
Gather the loose fabric at the front into approximately five to eight neat pleats, depending on the saree width and your preferred look.
Try to keep the pleats similar in size.
Align their lower edges, then tuck them into the centre-front waistband. Secure them carefully if needed.
Step 4: Arrange the Pallu
Bring the remaining fabric across your torso and over your left shoulder.
You can leave the pallu open for a flowing appearance or fold it into narrower pleats for a more structured look.
Adjust the length until it feels comfortable and balanced.
Step 5: Secure and Check Your Drape
Use pins discreetly where necessary, taking care not to damage delicate fabrics.
Walk a few steps, sit down and check that the pleats remain secure.
Make small adjustments before leaving home.
Beginner Mistakes to Avoid
Do not make the waist tuck too loose, place pins directly through delicate embroidery or leave the pallu so long that it catches underfoot.
It also helps to practise with a saree that has a manageable texture and is not heavily embellished.
